Movie Review: Jack Reacher

Movie Review: Jack Reacher

Knee Jerk Reaction: Not bad. Entertaining but still mediocre.

Tom Cruise plays Jack Reacher, a former investigator in the Army's Military Police officer, who has been adrift since his discharge.  When a sniper is accused of firing on a crowd and killing five random people, Jack Reacher is brought in to assist the defense attorney, played by Rosamund Pike.  Reacher uncovers a web of deception and conspiracy.

We often hear of scripts that were a bit lacking and then the actors manage to pull out brilliant performances from it. This unfortunately was not the case here.  The dialogue is nothing new and I'm not sure if there was real effort to make more out of what was there. This definitely does not help the utter cliche of the lead character, a mysterious drifter/anti-hero who helps to bring out the truth and take down the big bad.  We've seen it done.

Despite the script and 90% of the dialogue, there are some good things about this movie.  The fight sequences are cool and you definitely get the sense that Tom Cruise must have been having fun while working.  The father-daughter tension comes through in the scenes with Richard Jenkins and Rosamund Pike.  Alexia Fast has a secondary role, but her heart and charisma definitely leave an impression.

Gripes:
-Cruise's Reacher comes off as invincible.  A hero that rises above the odds is nothing new, but he does not have a hard time with anything.  Fairly generic.
-The score was not as complimentary to scenes as much as it was blatantly trying to manipulate  emotions.
-While there are a few moments which add some humor, there are more instances when you're not sure if the actors and director meant for you to laugh.

Overall: C+
Like I said before, its not bad and it is entertaining, but you just expect more.

SyFy developing Waterworld remake!

SyFy developing Waterworld remake!

Imagine a not-too-distant future where global warming lead to the melting of the polar ice caps drowning the entire world. Now, imagine a movie about this world, starring Kevin Costner, having one of the largest budgets at the time and only being a mediocre film. Well this movie has become a cult favorite and SyFy is giving us a remake!

The folks over at ARoleModel.com reports that SyFy is definitely moving along with this. Last month, Forbes reported that this was a possibility since SyFy and Universal Pictures has been putting money into a development fund and the original film is known for drawing (relatively) large number on the network. One of the last airings of Waterworld on SyFy brought in around 400,000 viewers.

The movie has a fairly unique take on a post-apocalyptic world and maybe a remake is just what it needs.  With the advancements in technology over the past 17 years, it could look a great deal better and would be cheaper to produce.

So with development just beginning, who knows how long it will be until we see the nameless mariner taking a wizz into that science contraption thing and drinking clean water.

Tell us what you thought of the original film!
Any other movies you want SyFy to consider remaking?

Eliza Dushku and Adam Rayner are set to star in an American version/remake of THE SAINT Adam Rayner will play Simon Templar, a professional thief with a heart of gold.  Between various acts of thievery and stealing from the rich and giving to the needy, Simon Templay will try to woo his on-again-off-again partner in crime, Patricia Holm played by Eliza Dushku.

Dusku is known for playing strong female characters like Echo in Joss Whedon's DOLLHOUSE, Faith in Whedon's Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, and Tru Davies in Tru Calling. Adam Rayner might be an unfamiliar name, but he recently starred in Dragon Age: Redemption miniseries with Felicia Day and several series in the UK including Hunted and Mistress.

Production began on Friday and if you follow Eliza Dushku on Twitter and Instagram, then you've seen pictures of her getting into fighting shape.

This is being filmed as a TV movie/backdoor pilot. There are currently no networks attached and this is being independently produced by executive producer Brad Krevoy's company MCPA.  Roger Moore, who played Simon Templar in the 1960s UK series, has been brought on to co-produce alongside Geoffrey Moore, Lulu Moore, and Louisa Macdonald. No word on an involvement with Val Kilmer who played Simon Templar in the 1997 movie.
