Engadget Meetup NYC 2012

Engadget Meetup NYC 2012

[TheAgroCraig]

I came across a posting on Engadget.com of their NYC meetup scheduled for November 29, 2012 about a week and a half ago while at work.  I was very elated at that time since I remember seeing a similar post for last year’s meetup which I could not attend.  I read the post about being able to talk to reps from the companies displaying their goodies, I figured, hey, this might be my way in to network with them to get a good feel for the company and possible employment.  The posting also said that there will be prizes given away, food, and other goodies.

Fast forward to the night of the event, I see a person with a solar panel backpack I figure this is it.  I arrive at Roseland Ballroom promptly at 5:30 and waited on line.  I looked around, saw fellow geeks and nerds with ranging from high school to probably in their mid to late 30s.  5:50 rolls around, a few of the editors walk outside to see the crowd gathered eagerly to get inside.  While talking to them, they mentioned they would be giving away ten of a hot item out right now, the Samsung Galaxy Note II.  It's now 6:00, they start letting people in.  Kudos for starting on time, but the big shocker came once I got inside.

Now, I’ve never been to Roseland Ballroom, but I’ve always heard it was a great venue to hear bands, and there have been a few I’ve been meaning to go see, but that’s for a different post.   Once entering the venue, I can see why it was free.  There was barely anything there.  To my left there were a few tables set up for the various tech companies to showcase their products and give demos.   To my right, the main stage with 10 Galaxy Note II phones.  There was one major flaw: LIGHTING.  Roseland Ballroom was set up for parties, loud music, and it is dimly lit.  If I was a going a rock show, it would be perfect.  While walking through the main floor, there were only about 6 companies there, all of which only had a small setup.  With the amount of people there, I felt like I was at Best Buy on Black Friday rather than looking at tech goodies and getting one-on-one time with the reps.

Samsung brought out their Windows 8 laptop/tablets.  The same goes with Dell.  After looking at Windows 8, I'm not impressed.  I saw a table for the Nook, iRobot (DJ ROOMBA IN THE HOUSE), and Oakley ski goggles with a HUD.  I saw some other stuff which doesn’t really matter because the event sucked.

After about 20 minutes, I left.  I felt sorry for the companies that were there.  Half the time people are fighting their way to the front of their tables to see what tech is out there, and when they get there, they can’t see what’s on the damn tables because it’s so dark.  I would figure there would be more advertisements for their target demographic, but I guess you get what you pay for.  That’s right, this was free.  Another thing, the reps for the companies did not even have any sort of badges.  They shared the same name tags as the rest of us in the room.  You would think there would be some differentiation between someone walking in, and a table worker.  Maybe I'm expecting too much.

The only good part of my night was walking through Rock Center and seeing the Christmas tree.   Beautiful isn’t it?

Justin Gordon-Levitt the next caped crusader?

Justin Gordon-Levitt the next caped crusader?

[MoriArty]

According to HitFix.com Warner Brothers is set to continue Nolan's Batman and cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the next Batman in the forthcoming Justice League movie tentatively scheduled to come out in 2015. With Nolan stating he won't have any involvement in the JLA movie, this is as close as Warner Brothers is going to get to continuing the story line Nolan created in the Dark Knight trilogy. This casting would make the most sense since the JLA movie will not be in the same universe as the Batman movies as this would be as close as DC could get to having some sort of continuous universe, which Marvel has successfully done with their Avengers franchise.

Deleted Scene from Thor!

Marvel Cinematic Universe "PHASE ONE" box set will be available for pre-order later today and the awesome folks at Marvel have released one of the deleted scenes from THOR to keep us satiated until that glorious box set gets to our grubby paws.

See the video after the jump!

Remember how in the end credits of THOR we follow this beam of light across the cosmos? Well the scene below shows us that it was Jane Foster, Darcy, and Dr. Selvig sending a message to Thor to help him find his way back.

One of the most important things to note is Selvig's mention of S.W.O.R.D., the Sentient World Observation and Response Department.  *gasps*

The PHASE ONE dvd box set will be available for pre-order today and will get to stores by April 2, 2013.  We'll be getting deleted scenes, some extended ones, and a look at the PHASE TWO movies; Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers 2.

Movie Review: Rise of the Guardians 3D

Movie Review: Rise of the Guardians 3D

-Terrhimself

Knee Jerk Reaction: I enjoyed it! One of the better kid movies that I've seen lately and found that the 3D visuals definitely brought an immersive quality that I haven't experienced in other 3D movies.

If you haven't seen the trailers, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, The Tooth Fairy, and the Sandman are The Guardians - essentially the mythical equivalent of The Justice League or the Avengers. The Guardians are tasked with preserving children's innocence, imagination and wonder.  Jack Frost is their newest recruit and they must stop the Boogeyman from turning children's dreams into nightmares and destroying their belief in the movie's heroes.

The movie does have a more serious tone than other recent ...
....animated movies (such as Hotel Transylvania and Wreck it Ralph) but there is solid amount of playfulness and comedy.  The Guardians' minions and underlings are definite scene stealers. Look out for Santa's Yetis and Elves and the Tooth Fairy's hummingbird-helper-thingies.

The voice acting was great and I definitely made a point to watch the credits to find out who was who. Chris Pine and Isla Fisher don't do much to disguise their voices although Fisher does use an American accent (which we've heard before). Jude Law's Boogeyman/Pitch is driven and menacing and his only flaw was that he looks too much like Hades (Disney's Hercules) and Voldemort.

Note: Santa is in this and there are many scenes in the North Pole, but this is not necessarily a kids movie.  It mostly takes place around March/April and Easter is a big thing.

Gripes:
-There were some fun flying and sledding sequences, but I did feel like they bordered on overuse and reminiscent of Disney's Tarzan.
-The previously stated Hades/Voldemort look of Pitch (pardon me if this character appears this same way in the children's books that I didn't read)

Overall: B+
A couple instances of voice actors hamming it up, but overall very enjoyable.

If you want to know what animated movies that animated movies we would give A's to, ask us on Twitter!
Movie Review - Red Dawn (2012)

Movie Review - Red Dawn (2012)

-TerrHimself

Knee Jerk Reaction
: I enjoyed it. Thought it was a solid remake of the original movie that I loved. I dare say that I liked it better.

If you haven't seen the trailer, America gets invaded and citizens quickly find themselves detained and thrown in prison camps.  During the initial invasion a group of young people (somewhere between the ages of 16-25) manage to evade capture and lead a rebellion.

Matt and Jed Eckert's brother relationship was a great thing to watch. The family strife is established early on and back story is given throughout the movie. You definitely see....
..... growth and development of Matt Eckert (played by Josh Peck) as he evolves from selfish quarterback to a team leader. Adrianne Palicki plays Toni, a role previously portrayed by Jennifer Grey.  She adds strength and heart to this role while Toni was seen as mostly a victim in the 1984 original.

There are nods to the original as you would expect, but it doesn't get bogged down by nostalgia. There are instances of light hearted playfulness that you would expect from misfit high school and college kids that wasn't there in the original film.

Gripes:
- While it is understandable that somethings can't be done practically, there were some sequences where it was obviously filmed in a studio with green screen.
- The movie doesn't make you care about any character other than those played by Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck or Adrianne Palicki. You almost wonder why any of the rest of them are even there.
- No real sense of urgency or desperation.

Overall: B
I liked the ending more than the the one in the original and the development of the relationship of the 3 leads, but there were some moments of payoff that fall flat.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Growing Cast List [UPDATED SOME MORE!]

The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Growing Cast List [UPDATED SOME MORE!]

Everyone's favorite wall crawler is getting ready for production and the cast list is growing.

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will be returning as Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy.  Shailene Woodley, known for her roles on television's The Secret Life of the American Teenager and 2011's The Descendants,  has been confirmed for TASM-2 and will likely be involved in TASM-3. Director, Marc Webb, is reportedly still working Jamie Foxx over to sign him on as Electro.  JAMIE FOXX is confirmed as Electro.

[UPDATE!!!!!]

Dane DeHaan was recently announced for the role of Harry Osbourne. Yeah I guess we didn't see that one coming either, Hollywood Reporter.
You might remember DeHaan playing Timbo, the werepanther, in season 4 of True Blood.

Dane DeHaan TIFF Portrait - P 2012

And not that it really matters, but Kirsten Dunst has given her approval of Shailene Woodley being cast as Mary Jane Watson. At least we know they're both pretty decent people.
"I really like her, a lot...I've met her a few times and we've talked about health foods, we know some of the same people, she's really into finding springs and natural water and she'll go get her water and things like that. I've done that before, and we've talked about that. I think she's a sweetheart and such a good actress.
"I'm happy, If I had to pick someone, I'm happy she's following in my shoes."

[UPDATED AGAIN]

Paul Giamatti, considered one of the greatest character actors in Hollywood, is in talks to play Aleksei Sytsevich, THE RHINO!
British actress, Felicity Jones, is in talks for an unspecified role. Maybe Felicia Hardy? Betty Brant? Debra Whitman? Liz Allan?

Via THR

UPDATED SOME MORE!!

Chris Cooper has been cast as Norman Osbourne. Fans of the Spider-Man franchise are already familiar with Norman Osbourne as the father of Peter Parker's friend Harry Osbourne and the Green Goblin.  No word yet if he'll be wearing green and flying through the sky. If he does, we hope that he doesn't look like a rejected Power Ranger that we saw in the previous film series.

SO TO RECAP:
Returning:
Andrew Garfield - Peter Parker/Spiderman
Emma Stone - Gwen Stacy
Sally Field - Aunt May
Martin Sheen - Uncle Ben

Coming in:
Jamie Foxx - Max Dillon/Electro
Paul Giamatti - Aleksei Sytsevich / The Rhino
Shailene Woodley - Mary Jane Watson
Daniel DeHaan - Harry Osbourne
Chris Cooper - Norman Osbourne
Felicity Jones - ???????????????

Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter stated that four actors are currently testing for the role of Harry Osbourn - portrayed by James Franco in the previous trilogy.  Vying for the roll are Sam Claflin, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth (LOL 2012), and Boyd Holbrook (The Big C, Hatfields & McCoys). You might remember Claflin from the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie and from Snow White and the Huntsman. You'll see Claflin again next year as Finnick Odair in Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Eddie Redmayne will be flexing his vocal chords in next month's film adaptation of Les Miserables

Initial D: Fifth Stage

Initial D: Fifth Stage

--TheAgroCraig

Of all the animes I’ve watched, Initial D holds a special place in my heart since it deals with another great passion of mine: cars.  Initial D Fifth Stage is obviously the fifth installment of a Japanese anime based off the Initial D manga.  For those who have been under a rock or just don’t care for anime, Initial D is a story of a young man named Takumi Fujiwara, a high school kid who delivers tofu for his father’s tofu shop.  He never had an itch for street racing, and just thought driving was a chore.  His best friend Itsuki Takeuchi, loved cars and wanted to be a member of the Akina SpeedStars and convinced Takumi to race.  Takumi meets Keisuke and Ryosuke Takahashi of the Agaki RedSuns, a rival car club in the Gunma prefecture and through many races, we see Takumi beat everyone and a spark is lit.  We see a natural progression of Takumi’s character similar to that of many young adolescents striving to find their purpose in life.  Now you might be thinking, “Oh what the hell, Cars? Racing? Sounds boring if he keeps winning.”  Well all I can say is this:  This show gives you an adrenaline rush.

Fifth Stage brings us to where Fourth Stage left off, Project D is still going, Takumi’s Trueno is broken, and he struggles to perfect the technique he’s seen from God’s Arm.  After watching the first two episodes you can tell the producers, animators, and writers took that extra step to make this an even better series.  It’s the little things that stick out, the sound effects the transmission makes while selecting reverse gear, the sound of a car door closing, and also seeing car movement due to the undulation of the road and its effects on a car’s suspension.  All of these things combined together are what makes car lovers like myself say, “Wow, holy crap, they got it right.”

The opening Intro is performed by a band in Japan called M.O.V.E. They have been creating music for this series since the beginning and while some of it is quite good, other songs, not so much.  It’s hit or miss really.   You have to remember this series started in the mid 90s.

All in all, Initial D is a fantastic series which showcases vehicle dynamics, racing technique, and actual character development.  The first four stages are available on Amazon or Netflix DVD rental, so I suggest you watch it.  Fifth Stage is currently being fansubbed by Sage Fansubs which can be found here.

New Gallery Now Up! [UPDATE]

New Gallery Now Up! [UPDATE]

-- MoriArty

Nice to have my first post finally up on the site, even if it is only a site update announcement. The NYCC (New York Comic Con) 2011 link is now up and working under the 'Events' category in the navbar at the top of the page. We took hundreds of pictures, but the ones posted are some of our favorites. NYCC 2012 link is still being worked on, so that will be up shortly, but enjoy and feel free to comment on last years pics for right now.

And I especially wanted to highlight one of the coolest companies we met that year. They're called Shirts for a Cure. This company works to support cancer treatment and NYCC 2011 was their first foray into fan conventions.  Please visit www.ShirtsForACure.com to purchase the shirt below, and many others including exclusives from some great musicians and bands.

NYCC 2012 gallery is now up!

Dream Casting - Daredevil

Dream Casting - Daredevil

By TerrHimself

In case you missed it, this past summer, the movie rights for Daredevil were forfeited by Fox to Marvel. I'll hold off until another post to discuss if I'm worried that a Disney owned Marvel will give us a watered down DD that isn't nearly as dark as fans would like it to be. I’m not going to get into how the 2003 movie failed on various levels. I’m not going to get into how its like the director and execs said, “Let’s make this a Daredevil movie which will essentially be like Batman Forever + The Crow.” I'm not going to do any of that right now.

This is the first of many NGUOnline Dream Castings.
Essentially what I'm putting together here is a cast for a DD movie where we take elements of Frank Miller's DD Born Again story arc and throw in just a little bit of the Elektra Saga which would lead in to DD-2.

Here goes:

DareDevil/Matt Murdock - Matt Bomer

Let's give this guy a shot. If you've seen USA's WHITE COLLAR, you would know that he has acting chops and we've seen him do a bit of physical stuff on NBC's CHUCK.  Let's put him on some roof tops doing parkour, in a court room doing lawyer things, and slowly chip away at his sanity.

Foggy Nelson - Mark Webber or Sean Astin

Ok, so we've seen Sean Astin play the chubby best friend and Mark Webber steal scenes in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but I'm seriously interested in seeing one of these guys work a court room and try to keep the man without fear in line.

Elektra - Odette Annable
Odette Annable as DD's college girlfriend/deadly assassin.  How much explaining do I have to do here?

"Battling" Jack Murdock - Kiefer Sutherland or Peter Gallagher

Young Matt is going to need a dad that can give and take a beating and also be a guiding light. You know, until he gets killed for refusing to throw a fight.

Karen Page - Dianna Agron
Yeah, so how about Quinn Fabray from Glee as Matt Murdock's girlfriend, who eventually leaves him, becomes a drugged out porn star that eventually sell's his secret identity for some coke? We all know that's where Quinn will end up anyway.

Ben Urich - Lou Diamond Phillips or Alan Tudyk
Hard nose, chain smoking, investigative reporter that will stand toe-to-toe with cops and gangsters to get a story.

Stick - Manong Dan Inosanto
Someone has to teach Matt Murdoch to fight. Why not bring in the man who brought Filipino Kali/Escrima/Stick Fighting to America and Hollywood?  He's had some small roles in various movies and has been a fight choreographer/consultant for nearly 50 years.

Bullseye - Rufus Sewell
Sewell - beautifully menacing. He can go from sympathetic to sociopath at a drop of a dime.

The Kingpin - John Rhys Davies or Philip Seymour Hoffman
Ok. Michael Clarke Duncan was cool, but I still felt he came off as more of a thug than evil billionaire tycoon kingpin of crime.  I think one of these guys can do it.

Alright, tell me what you think, who you prefer, or where you think I was off target.

TerrHimself vs. Batman #14

TerrHimself vs. Batman #14

The Death of the Family story arc started up in #13 and there is no letting up.  If you haven't been reading, Mr. J has been away for the past year and has just come back to Gotham to take apart the entire Bat-Family. And as you can see from the cover of #14, Joker has been doing his homework.

The Joker isn't present for most of this issue, but Snyder and Capullo continue to build tension by making sure that we know that his presence is every where - take a look at Bruce's stereo that Batman uses to a play a cassette tape the Joker left for him. Joker is making things personal and a big question on everyone's mind is just how much does the Joker know? Does he know the secret identities?

This issue gives further evidence that no one can get get under Batman's skin the way the Joker can.  There are a couple pages of Batman talking with Nightwing where Batman barely has a grip on his emotions and speaks through his grinding teeth.

Batman has gotten himself an ego since he's bested the Joker so many times in the past, but as the issues in the New 52 have shown us, Batman isn't as great and all knowing as he has been thinking.  You would think that after the Night of Owls, he'd have been knocked down a few pegs.  Well I guess that's the Joker's job to hammer that point in.

I'm giving this issue a 4.5 out of 5. And that's only because I was less impressed by the back-up story in this issue than I was with the one in #13. If you read #13, then you know what I'm saying.
