Veronica Mars Movie Coming Via KickStarter!

Something amazing has happened. As the saying goes, "We're getting the gang back together for one last job." Such is the case with Veronica Mars, the beloved teen crime drama that debuted in 2004 and lasted 3 seasons.

Last night, just 10 hours after the KickStarter project launched, The Veronica Mars Movie Project reached its goal of $2 million dollars. The goal was to raise $2 million in 30 days. And if they reached it, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution would agree to put the movie into production and pick up the tab for marketing, promotion, and distribution. After news of the project broke via Twitter and Entertainment Weekly, VM fans came out swinging. Within 4 hours of the announcement, the project hit the $1million mark. By 8:55 PM EST, the project hit its goal of $2million. The previous KickStarter record was $1million in 7 hours.

Kristen Bell has promised the Marshmallows that she and VM crew will "...make the sleuthiest, snarkiest, it’s-all-fun-and-games-‘til-one-of-you-gets-my-foot-up-your-ass movie we possibly can."

And just because they've hit their initial goal, doesn't mean they aren't still accepting money. On the KickStarter page, Rob Thomas goes on to say, "Keep in mind that the more money we raise, the cooler movie we can make. A two million dollar fundraising total probably means cross words are exchanged at the class reunion. Three million? We can afford a full-on brawl. Ten million? Who knows..."
There are some pretty cool perks for donating such as a PDF of the shooting script, digital movie downloads, T-shirts, even a voicemail greeting message.

Production is expected to begin this Summer and the movie would have a limited theatrical release in early 2014 (before moving to VOD, iTunes, and other digital platforms).

So what does this all mean? Means that fan involvement has come a long way and that the type of involvement is changing. We live in a world where fans have sent network executives hundreds and hundreds of pounds of peanuts to get another season of their favorite show. Where countless forums, letters, and donations to charities have gotten fans another trip into the black with their favorite space-cowboy. Where fans have staged buy-ins and eaten countless foot-long sandwiches from show sponsors for more adventures with a college drop out with a computer in his brain.

It also means that there's a glimmer of hope for other shows that are greatly missed.

So what shows would you be interested in donating/investing in if a Creator & Studio supported KickStarter project came about? Let us know in the comments below!
