Coming Attractions: March 2013

Coming Attractions is a monthly piece in which I let you know what I think will be the best movies releasing in the coming month. So if you plan on going to the movies any time this month, hopefully I’ll give you an idea as to what your best bet will be each week. So without further ado, here are the coming attractions for March 2013:

Friday, Mar. 1

21 and Over
Directed by: Jon Lucas, Scott Moore
Written by: Jon Lucas, Scott Moore
Starring: Skylar Astin, Miles Teller, Justin Chon, Sarah Wright, Francois Chau

When a college student turns 21, his two best friends from high school show up to help him celebrate the milestone birthday despite the fact that he has a medical school exam the next morning. Much alcohol is consumed and much hilarity ensues. It’s kind of like The Hangover, except with 21-year-olds. Which makes sense, because it was written and directed by the same guys that wrote The Hangover.

Friday, Mar. 8

Oz the Great and Powerful
Directed by: Sam Raimi
Written by: Mitchell Kapner, David Lindsay-Abaire
Starring: James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff

An exploration into the world of Oz before it became what we saw in the classic 1939 film. How did the Wizard and the Wicked Witch come to be? Directed by Sam Raimi, featuring an all-star cast, and set in a world designed by the same team that brought Wonderland to life in Tim Burton’s 2010 film, this movie is sure to give us the answers in style.

Friday, Mar. 15

Upside Down
Directed by: Juan Diego Solonas
Written by: Juan Diego Solonas
Starring: Jim Sturgess, Kirsten Dunst

In a universe where where two Earths lie parallel to one another, there are two gravities pulling. One world, Up, is where the rich and prosperous enjoy the bounty of their lives. On Down the poor and downtrodden live out a meager existence. When a girl from Up and a boy from down meet at the top of a mountain where their worlds collide, a classic story of forbidden love across social classes unfolds, but with a new sci-fi twist.

Friday, Mar. 22

Spring Breakers
Directed by: Harmony Korine
Written by: Harmony Korine
Starring: James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine

When four college girls can’t afford to travel for spring break they take matters into their own hands, robbing a convenience store to fund their trip. After being arrested on drug charges during their trip to Florida, they’re bailed out by a gangster named Alien and lured into his criminal underworld. This movie is definitely original, and is probably worth seeing for James Franco’s performance alone.

Friday, Mar. 29

The Place Beyond the Pines (LIMITED RELEASE)
Directed by: Derek Cianfrance
Written by: Derek Cianfrance, Ben Coccio, Darius Marder
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Rose Byrne, Dane DeHaan

When a motorcycle stunt rider commits a crime to provide for his family, he’s put up against an idealistic cop-turned-politician. A character drama exploring the relationship between a father and son from the director of Blue Valentine, this is sure to be dramatic and heartfelt. It’s also got Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper for the ladies to look at, and Eva mendes and Rose Byrne for the guys to ogle; everybody wins.

Honorable Mentions

Jack the Giant Slayer (Mar. 1)
Directed by: Bryan Singer
Written by: Darren Lemke, Christopher McQuarrie, Dan Studney
Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy

A great fantasy adventure movie that doesn’t try to be realistic and just embraces the fanciful nature of its story. There’s great chemistry between the two leads, and an awesome supporting cast only adds to the charm. If you’re just looking for a fun, entertaining flick this is a good choice.

The ABCs of Death (Mar. 8 - LIMITED RELEASE)
Directed by: 26 various writer/directors
Written by: 26 various writer/directors
Starring: Too many people to count

26 different writer/directors from 15 different contribute short films showing varying instances of death, each corresponding to a letter of the alphabet. With the diverse stories showing death in all of its beautiful, horrifying glory, this movie should be a hit with horror fans. Check it out if it’s playing in your area.

Olympus Has Fallen (Mar. 22)
Directed by: Antoine Fuqua
Written by: Creighton Rothenberger, Katrin Benedikt
Starring: Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo

When a secret service agent is disgraced after failing to save the First Lady’s life in a terrorist attempt on the President’s life, he is forced to take a regular day job. But when another terrorist attack results in the President being kidnapped and the White House being taken over, the same secret service agent gets a bunch of guns and kills all the terrorists on his own. I think... I’m not sure, the trailer wasn’t too clear. But there’s lots of explosions if you like that kind of thing.
