Previews for The Walking Dead Season 4!

Previews for The Walking Dead Season 4!

October 13th cannot come soon enough for fans of The Walking Dead. AMC has been sprinkling in some undead goodness throughout the summer to satiate fans.  We've got 3 videos below; one featuring Miss "Speak Softly and Carry a Big Ass Sword" riding a horse through the gates of the prison, a behind the scenes featurette, and the extended preview from SDCC.

In the next video, Andrew Lincoln confirms that our good ol' friend, the Time Jump, is back - a necessity since the show shoots in Atlanta's summertime.  Any bits about the winter and spring will likely come via exposition as has been done in the past seasons.
Kirkman boasts, "We're making everything like different and new and unique for this season...And I think there's going to be some really cool new elements thrown in that will shock you!"

As we saw in the season 3 finale, we can expect some new faces in the mix.  It also looks as though comic-fan-favorite Tyreese has an increasingly important role this season.

And here is the 4 minute extended preview from San Diego Comic Con:

We can expect big things from Kirkman and Nicotero's team. More face in the jail-farm-village means more drama. More zombies. Bits of hope that will no doubt be torn from our favorite survivors.
And [spoiler alert, but c'mon if you're reading this, you probably watched season3] don't forget that somewhere out there (beneath the pale moonlight... sorry. Totally unrelated An American Tail reference) is The Governor and his buddies.

The Walking Dead returns on October 13th at 9pm EST.

Upcoming CW Fall Series Previews and Artwork!

Upcoming CW Fall Series Previews and Artwork!

The CW has just released artwork for three shows that will be coming to your television in just a few weeks. Check out the pretty pretty pictures and the show previews!

The Tomorrow People
The Tomorrow People is a sci-fi action drama starring Robbie Amell (center), Peyton List (left), and Luke Mitchell (right). Amell plays Stephen Jameson, who could be considered average if not for his ability to hear voices and teleport in his sleep.  Jameson meets Cara and John (List and Mitchell) and finds out he's one of the "Tomorrow People" a super powered, super secret race and they're all being hunted by an organization of paramilitary scientists, ULTRA, led by Dr. Jedikiah Prince (Mark Pellegrino).
It's worth noting that this is remake of 1970s British children's show that ran for 68 episodes. The series was later reimagined in the 90s (also in the UK) and ran for 25 episodes.

.....................................................................................................................................................................

Reign
Reign stars Adelaide Kane (Teen Wolf), Toby Regbo (ITV’s The Town), Torrance Coombs (The Tudors), Megan Follows (Anne of Green Gables). Mary, Queen of Scots (Kane) is a blossoming teen, coming out of hiding to reunite with Regbo's Prince Francis of France, and to formalize their arranged marriage.  Francis isn't quite ready to settle down and his mother, Queen Catherine, has got some ulterior motives (as most queens do).
Who wants to bet how many essays will be written by high school girls comparing this show to events in their history books?

.....................................................................................................................................................................

The Originals is the upcoming spin-off of CW's hit show, The Vampire Diaries. The Originals stars
The Vampire Diaries' Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, Claire Holt and Phoebe Tonkin; Charles Michael Davis (The Game), Daniella Pineda (Homeland), Danielle Campbell (Prison Break), Leah Pipes (Sorority Row). Klaus is back in New Orleans' French Quarter. Haley is carrying his baby  and Marcel, his former protege, is now King.
Wait. There's another vampire king in Louisiana and Sookie Stackhouse isn't under him? har har har.

Let me know in the comments below if you're excited for these shows or any of the 30 other shows set to debut this year.

Batman: The Great Debate

Batman: The Great Debate

Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill
Batman vs Superman

I am in the camp of people that really loved Man of Steel. I am in the camp that was stunned by the casting of Ben Affleck as the next Batman.

That is where I stood on that fateful day of casting news.

This tweet from one of my favorite twitterers helped me move on from the now notorious Batfleck explosion:

WEEELLLLLL, yeah. True dat.

Wow, I was so upset by Ruffalo as the Hulk in the early casting days, but then as we all know, he went and nailed it.

Nailed. It.

In less than a day there were posts from varying geek sites arguing why Affleck is actually a good casting choice. Even Joss Whedon gave his stamp of approval via his twitter; he also recommended that we go read this:

WOW. Well said, Mr. Oswalt. Color me corrected and intrigued.

SO, with that, I now join the quest with countless masses of other nerdlings to search for the Caped Crusader in Mr. Affleck via his movies. I'm going to rewatch certain films of his with the fresh perspective that he's gonna be Batman.

JOIN ME! Together we can rule the ga-- I mean, join me in this quest. I'll be live tweeting, too, if you don't have time to watch the movies. I shall do a follow-up post after I complete my movie crusade! Watch this space!

To Seek The Holy Grail,

Science: Girls with Secret Labs!

Science: Girls with Secret Labs!

It's not just Dexter with a secret lab at home!!!

Turns out, this whole time, there have been two girls who could kinda pass as Dee Dee with secret labs in their homes. Okay, maybe not secret. 16 year old Evie Sobczack has a laboratory in her garage where she's been tinkering with a device for extracting algae byproduct for alternative fuel. As if one chick with an at-home lab wasn't already cool enough, 17 year old Sara Volz has a lab in her room under her loft-bed! With it she's been developing a process for increasing the amount of output from algae grown for biofuel. Both are blondish, both are teens, both have their own laboratories at home, they live across the country from each other, and are legitimately innovating!

Introooducing... Eviiieeee Sobczack! Evie has developed a totally new chemical-free way to extract oils from algae and turn them into biofuel. OH, and it's 20% more betterer (*cough* efficient) than current known methods!! BOOM. The device she invented won first place at the Intel INTERNATIONAL (not just national) Science and Engineering Fair. She started the project in 8th grade (I was so stupid in 8th grade *facepalm*) designing her own bioreactor, cellulose blaster, and other equipment that she needed to make her award winning device.

Ladies and Gents, 16 yr old Evie Sobczack of Florida
via Inhabitat

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, 17yr old Sara Volz made a biofuel lab under her bed to work on a method for identifying which algae are most productive. She successfully invented a way to do this and thereby increase the productivity of the algae for biofuel by honing in on algae producing the most oils and eliminating the poor performers. Her innovation led her to win the $100,000 winning prize from the Intel Science Talent Search. Unlike Sara, the only dedication I had at 17 was to eating brownies, not sleeping with the same light cycles that the algae in my bedroom lab required. I tip my hat to her!

So cute with her sciency stuff!!
Sara Volz, 17yrs old, of Colorado

I'm very excited about algae as an energy resource now. Don't be surprised if I write a post all about it sometime; I was tempted to go on about it here and now!!! My better judgement is telling me to pace myself.

Needless to say, these girls are an inspiration and provide us with some hope for the future and for our dire green energy needs.

Bangorang!

Howl's Moving Castle is Real

Howl's Moving Castle is Real

Howl's Moving Castle?

Okay, so it's not REALLY Howl's Moving Castle; it's the Neverwas Haul! Close enough, though! It's a veritable Steampunk architectural treat! It even has a small steam engine for effect. I can just see Calcifer in there complaining about stuff. This thing is so cool; it fuels my imagination! I just wanna play dress up and have a party there with friends.

Tuns out you can! While it does travel to various festivals, it mainly lives in Obtanium Works in Vallejo, CA. They rent out the venue, with access to the Neverwas Haul, for weddings and gatherings! Oh, we wants to do that, Precious!

This lovely victorian contraption was dreamed up by the "Travelling Academy of UnNatural Science" captained by "Major Catasrophe", otherwise known as Shannon O'Hare. It's a pretend club, and the Neverwas Haul is their clubhouse and base for travels around the globe. I love the spirit of the thing!

Shannon O'Hare, the Mastermind

It was made entirely by freely obtained collectables, antiques, and oddities; so everything in it is made up of recycled parts, or, pre-loved stuff. To see more pictures, visit the Obtanium Works post about it here, as it showcases some video footage and a link to lots of Flickr photos. For a more in-depth read, Collector's Weekly did a big write-up on it here with an interview with Major Catastrophe himself.

I love it when people have fun and do what they love. I especially love playing pretends and dress-up. BIG THUMBS UP from me!!

Never Grow Up!

The Joker and Harley Quinn in Real Life! Mark Hamill and Tara Strong

The Joker and Harley Quinn in Real Life! Mark Hamill and Tara Strong

Mr. J and Harley...I mean Tara Strong and Mark Hamill having a fun little moment while working on "Ben 10."

(via @TaraStrong and @HamillHimself*)
..................................................................................................................................................................

*Just wanted to note that I am not copying Mark Hamill's Twitter and I've been using the "TerrHimself" moniker for about 10 years now. For all I know, that dude is totally copying me.
Same with Neil Gaiman.
BatFleck Rises - Ben Affleck cast as Batman

BatFleck Rises - Ben Affleck cast as Batman

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman.

Warner Bros. announced on Thursday that the two-time Oscar winner, former DareDevil, People Magazine's 2002 Sexiest Man Alive, Affleck will don the cape and cowl in 2015's untitled Batman-Superman movie.  Greg Silverman, Warner Bros’ President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, said, "We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some... His outstanding career is a testament to his talent, and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character."

Zack Snyder went on the record to say this about Affleck: "He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him."

Ben Affleck will join the cast of returning actors from this Summer's Man Of Steel, which include Henry Cavill, who will reprise the role of Superman/Clark Kent, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. David S. Goyer, who scripted the MOS and worked on the Dark Knight trilogy, will write the sequel. Warner Bros has set the film to open worldwide on July 17, 2015.

The WB's President of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Susan Kroll, added, “We are so thrilled that Ben is continuing Warner Bros.’ remarkable legacy with the character of Batman. He is a tremendously gifted actor who will make this role his own in this already much-anticipated pairing of these two beloved heroes.”

Ben Affleck now joins the special fraternity of those who have worn the cape in front of a camera; Christian Bale (3x), George Clooney (once), Val Kilmer (once), Michael Keaton (twice), and Adam West (1 movie + 120 episodes of tv).

(via Variety)

And DareDevil? Yeah he didn't like that movie any more than the fans did. Check out his thoughts on that in Details.
And in an interview with MTV, "We missed a lot in that movie..."

Ok. Take a deep breath. Gather your thoughts and let us know what you think in the comments below.  And please try to do so without words that you wouldn't be allowed to say in an elementary school.

Until next time.....

Epic New Dragon Bridge in Vietnam is Epic

Epic New Dragon Bridge in Vietnam is Epic

The Dragon Bridge, Da Nang, Vietnam

It is officially epic as it is the world's largest steel dragon bridge! The fun doesn't stop there, folks. It breathes fire! It spits water! It's green energy friendly as it's lit up in energy efficient LED lights! Oh, and let us not forget the most epic part of it all: it is a DRAGON.

I freaking love dragons!

Fire. Breathing. Dragon.

It spews forth water!

Constructed to reflect the city's economic development and accomodate traffic growth, it also celebrates the city's liberation after the Vietnam War. The Dragon Bridge was inaugurated on the 38th anniversary of the occasion this past March. Built in just four years at 545 feet long with six lanes, it's a pretty badass design and accomplishment!

Lit by 2,500 LED lights

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Dragon Bridge!

May the odds be ever in your favor,

Initial D: Final Stage!?!?!?!

Initial D: Final Stage!?!?!?!

All good things must come to an end.  One of the most beloved cult anime/manga series will be ending soon.  It seems like yesterday that I was posting about Initial D: Fifth Stage, and now the final curtain call.  The manga is available at various sites on the net, if you haven't already I highly suggest you read it.

I've been reading the manga and they've been hinting that it will be ending soon.  A bad omen appeared in one of the chapters which had me shook, but I did not think anything of it, until now.  These innuendos have foreshadowed different possibilities of ending the series.  Being a car fanatic this has me at the edge of my seat.  Don't worry, they will be releasing Final Stage anime some time in the future.  My guess is it will be in animated movie format like Third Stage, but who knows, maybe they will stretch it out across multiple episodes.

See full article at The Atlantic

Look!

Neil Gaiman says the Twelfth Doctor role (Doctor Who) was initially offered to a black actor!! BUT HE TURNED IT DOWN. I enjoyed the article about it from Geek-O-System. I would have loved a black brit Doctor! I'm still very happy about Peter Capaldi, of course, but I'm really excited by the idea that he was the second pick.

GeekOSytem offers a great story and theories here.

I found a list on The Mary Sue covering the top ten anime to watch! I've been wanting just such a list and was pleased to find it. If you are an anime novice, like myself, wishing to dip the toes in further, check out this list!

Coming Attractions: August 2013

Coming Attractions: August 2013

Coming Attractions is a monthly piece in which I let you know what I think will be the best movies releasing in the coming month. So if you plan on going to the movies any time this month, hopefully I’ll give you an idea as to what your best bet will be each week. So without further ado, here are the coming attractions for August 2013:

Friday, August 2

The Spectacular Now (Limited Release)

Directed by: James Ponsoldt
Written by: Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber
Starring: Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mary Elizabeth Winstead

From the writers of (500) Days of Summer, the director of last year's Smashed, and based off an incredible novel; a recipe for success. While it doesn't pack quite the emotional punch of the book, this film was perfectly cast (especially in the case of the two leads) and take you on a raw, emotional journey. At one point you can literally feel two people fall in love over the course of a single long take. A wonderful, bittersweet love story.

Friday, August 9

Elysium

Directed by: Neill Blomkamp
Written by: Neil Blomkamp
Starring: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna

In the near-ish future, a man with nothing to lose tries to escape from the low-class wasteland that Earth has become to the space station Elysium, which houses all the wealthy people who have left Earth. Coming from Neill Blomkamp, who brought us Disctrict 9 a few years ago, rest assured that we'll get a gritty, realistic depiction of a sci-fi future featuring social issues of today's world.

Friday, August 16

Kick-Ass 2

Directed by: Jeff Wadlow
Written by: Jeff Wadlow
Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jim Carrey

A follow-up to the 2010 film, superheros are now commonplace, but so are the villains. Kick-Ass faces the revenge of The Mother Fucker (formerly Red Mist), Hit Girl is back to be adorable yet dangerous, and Jim Carrey plays a semi-insane person (surprise). It looks pretty much just like the first installment, but with more people dressing up and being violent. Definitely check it out if that's you liked the original.

Friday, August 23

The World's End

Directed by: Edgar Wright
Written by: Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg
Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Rosamund Pike, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan

One of my most anticipated films of the year. A group of old friends get together after years apart to finish a bar hop they failed to complete back in the good old days. Now from all different walks of life, they reflect over how things have changed over time. Also, the world is invaded by aliens while they continue to get drunk. Completing the Three Flavours Cornetto/Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy also made up of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, this sci-fi satire looks to be just as brilliantly funny as the other two team-ups between director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Wednesday, August 28

Closed Circuit

Directed by: John Crowley
Written by: Steven Knight
Starring: Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, Ciarán Hinds, Jim Broadbent

I know virtually nothing about this movie other than that it's a crime/conspiracy thriller and the poster says that it stars Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, Ciarán Hinds, and Jim Broadbent; but frankly, with a cast like that, it's all I need to know.

Honorable Mentions
Europa Report (August 2 - LIMITED RELEASE)

Directed by: Sebastián Cordero
Written by: Philip Gelatt
Starring: Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyqvist

A sci-fi thriller depicting a ship's research voyage to Jupiter's moon Europa, where all kinds of crazy stuff begins going down. Highly lauded as being presenting space travel and the plausibility of Europan conditions in a realistic manner, Europa Report seems to be more along the line of hard sci-fi like 2001: A Space Odyssey. A must-see if the bright lights and laser guns of the other sci-fi space flicks just don't cut it for you.

Prince Avalanche (August 9 - LIMITED RELEASE)

Directed by: David Gordon Green
Written by: David Gordon Green
Starring: Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch

Director David Gordon Green (who you may know from directing Pineapple Express and Your Highness) returns to his indie roots with a story of two men who retreat into the country to take on the menial task of painting traffic lines down a highway and rediscover themselves. A Sundance film that promises some great comedic but touching performances from Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch.

Drinking Buddies (August 23 - LIMITED)

Directed by: Joe Swanberg
Written by: Joe Swanberg
Starring: Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick, Ron Livingston

I'm not usually one for romantic comedies with characters who are clearly with the wrong person while Mr./Miss Right is standing right in front of them the whole time, but this is another case where an amazingly funny and talented core cast is enough to pull me in to something I wouldn't otherwise be too interested in. However, if those types of rom-coms are your thing, you definitely don't want to miss this one. It's bound to be good.

Short Term 12 (August 23 - LIMITED)

Directed by: Destin Daniel Cretton
Written by: Destin Daniel Cretton
Starring: Brie Larson; John Gallagher, Jr.; Kaitlyn Dever; Rami Malek; Keith Stanfield

A South by Southwest film darling about a young woman (the incredibly talented Brie Larson) working at a foster center for at-risk children. Always putting her own problems aside for the children, she begins coming to terms with her own life. Apparently this packs a hell of an emotional punch and has some great performances to boot.

You're Next (August 23)

Directed by:
Written by: Matthew Michael Carnahan, Drew Goddard, Damon Lindelof
Starring: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, David Morse, Abigail Hargrove

A horror flick that's not standard fare when it comes to home invasion thrillers. When a group of dog-face mask-wearing killers start tormenting a family having a get-together at their cabin in the woods, they get more than they bargained for. Getting lots of acclaim and being touted as a breath of fresh air for films featuring home invasions.
