Initial D: Final Stage!?!?!?!

Initial D: Final Stage!?!?!?!

All good things must come to an end.  One of the most beloved cult anime/manga series will be ending soon.  It seems like yesterday that I was posting about Initial D: Fifth Stage, and now the final curtain call.  The manga is available at various sites on the net, if you haven't already I highly suggest you read it.

I've been reading the manga and they've been hinting that it will be ending soon.  A bad omen appeared in one of the chapters which had me shook, but I did not think anything of it, until now.  These innuendos have foreshadowed different possibilities of ending the series.  Being a car fanatic this has me at the edge of my seat.  Don't worry, they will be releasing Final Stage anime some time in the future.  My guess is it will be in animated movie format like Third Stage, but who knows, maybe they will stretch it out across multiple episodes.

Neil Gaiman says the Twelfth Doctor role (Doctor Who) was initially offered to a black actor!! BUT HE TURNED IT DOWN. I enjoyed the article about it from Geek-O-System. I would have loved a black brit Doctor! I'm still very happy about Peter Capaldi, of course, but I'm really excited by the idea that he was the second pick.

GeekOSytem offers a great story and theories here.

Look!

I found a list on The Mary Sue covering the top ten anime to watch! I've been wanting just such a list and was pleased to find it. If you are an anime novice, like myself, wishing to dip the toes in further, check out this list!

If I might add my own two cents, I LOVED "Fruits Basket" and "Azumanga Daioh". Like, ridiculously loved them.

Coming Attractions: August 2013

Coming Attractions: August 2013

Coming Attractions is a monthly piece in which I let you know what I think will be the best movies releasing in the coming month. So if you plan on going to the movies any time this month, hopefully I’ll give you an idea as to what your best bet will be each week. So without further ado, here are the coming attractions for August 2013:

Friday, August 2

The Spectacular Now (Limited Release)

Directed by: James Ponsoldt
Written by: Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber
Starring: Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mary Elizabeth Winstead

From the writers of (500) Days of Summer, the director of last year's Smashed, and based off an incredible novel; a recipe for success. While it doesn't pack quite the emotional punch of the book, this film was perfectly cast (especially in the case of the two leads) and take you on a raw, emotional journey. At one point you can literally feel two people fall in love over the course of a single long take. A wonderful, bittersweet love story.

Friday, August 9

Elysium

Directed by: Neill Blomkamp
Written by: Neil Blomkamp
Starring: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna

In the near-ish future, a man with nothing to lose tries to escape from the low-class wasteland that Earth has become to the space station Elysium, which houses all the wealthy people who have left Earth. Coming from Neill Blomkamp, who brought us Disctrict 9 a few years ago, rest assured that we'll get a gritty, realistic depiction of a sci-fi future featuring social issues of today's world.

Friday, August 16

Kick-Ass 2

Directed by: Jeff Wadlow
Written by: Jeff Wadlow
Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jim Carrey

A follow-up to the 2010 film, superheros are now commonplace, but so are the villains. Kick-Ass faces the revenge of The Mother Fucker (formerly Red Mist), Hit Girl is back to be adorable yet dangerous, and Jim Carrey plays a semi-insane person (surprise). It looks pretty much just like the first installment, but with more people dressing up and being violent. Definitely check it out if that's you liked the original.

The World's End

Directed by: Edgar Wright
Written by: Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg
Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Rosamund Pike, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan

One of my most anticipated films of the year. A group of old friends get together after years apart to finish a bar hop they failed to complete back in the good old days. Now from all different walks of life, they reflect over how things have changed over time. Also, the world is invaded by aliens while they continue to get drunk. Completing the Three Flavours Cornetto/Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy also made up of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, this sci-fi satire looks to be just as brilliantly funny as the other two team-ups between director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Wednesday, August 28

Closed Circuit

Directed by: John Crowley
Written by: Steven Knight
Starring: Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, Ciarán Hinds, Jim Broadbent

I know virtually nothing about this movie other than that it's a crime/conspiracy thriller and the poster says that it stars Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, Ciarán Hinds, and Jim Broadbent; but frankly, with a cast like that, it's all I need to know.

Honorable Mentions
Europa Report (August 2 - LIMITED RELEASE)

Directed by: Sebastián Cordero
Written by: Philip Gelatt
Starring: Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyqvist

A sci-fi thriller depicting a ship's research voyage to Jupiter's moon Europa, where all kinds of crazy stuff begins going down. Highly lauded as being presenting space travel and the plausibility of Europan conditions in a realistic manner, Europa Report seems to be more along the line of hard sci-fi like 2001: A Space Odyssey. A must-see if the bright lights and laser guns of the other sci-fi space flicks just don't cut it for you.

Prince Avalanche (August 9 - LIMITED RELEASE)

Directed by: David Gordon Green
Written by: David Gordon Green
Starring: Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch

Director David Gordon Green (who you may know from directing Pineapple Express and Your Highness) returns to his indie roots with a story of two men who retreat into the country to take on the menial task of painting traffic lines down a highway and rediscover themselves. A Sundance film that promises some great comedic but touching performances from Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch.

Drinking Buddies (August 23 - LIMITED)

Directed by: Joe Swanberg
Written by: Joe Swanberg
Starring: Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick, Ron Livingston

I'm not usually one for romantic comedies with characters who are clearly with the wrong person while Mr./Miss Right is standing right in front of them the whole time, but this is another case where an amazingly funny and talented core cast is enough to pull me in to something I wouldn't otherwise be too interested in. However, if those types of rom-coms are your thing, you definitely don't want to miss this one. It's bound to be good.

Short Term 12 (August 23 - LIMITED)

Directed by: Destin Daniel Cretton
Written by: Destin Daniel Cretton
Starring: Brie Larson; John Gallagher, Jr.; Kaitlyn Dever; Rami Malek; Keith Stanfield

A South by Southwest film darling about a young woman (the incredibly talented Brie Larson) working at a foster center for at-risk children. Always putting her own problems aside for the children, she begins coming to terms with her own life. Apparently this packs a hell of an emotional punch and has some great performances to boot.

You're Next (August 23)

Directed by:
Written by: Matthew Michael Carnahan, Drew Goddard, Damon Lindelof
Starring: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, David Morse, Abigail Hargrove

A horror flick that's not standard fare when it comes to home invasion thrillers. When a group of dog-face mask-wearing killers start tormenting a family having a get-together at their cabin in the woods, they get more than they bargained for. Getting lots of acclaim and being touted as a breath of fresh air for films featuring home invasions.

BBC's Luther

BBC's Luther

Luther S3

Luther is back!

You know Idris Elba from Thor, from Prometheus, and now from Pacific Rim. HOWEVER, did you know him from before all that? Have you met him yet as DCI John Luther? The beast from BBC's ongoing drama Luther? If not, OOHHHH, how you must correct that.

Idris Elba with his Golden Globe from playing Luther.
He won an AWARD!

Series 3 has recently aired in the UK and it's coming to BBC America on September 3rd!! Wherever you watch your shows, I highly recommend cueing up this one. BBC runs long episodes over a short season. There are only 4 episodes this series; and they do not disappoint. Each series has just gotten better.

WHY watch you ask? What's all the fuss?? Wot's it about? Imma tell you.

S3 Promotional Photo

This show falls under crime drama the same way Dexter does. Yeah, there are crimes and cases floating around the show, but it's really all about the character. It's all about Luther. Dexter breaks the rules because he IS a psychopath. Luther breaks the rules because he's a BAMF who doesn't care what he has to do to get the bad guy and actually protect the real victims. Does he go too far? Does he become evil? Does he stay good? Does he get busted? Is he really a BAMF?

But that's not all!!!

The scenes. The SCENES. They start out pretty chill in the first few episodes of S1, but they do escalate. Whether its a crime scene, or the crime happening, or the suspense of the crime maybe happening, there are some seriously epic moments. In series one, I'll never forget the time I was all "la, la, la" just chillin' and watching one moment, nek minnit, screaming "OH MY GOD!!!!!" and jumping out of my happy place.

Then there are the bad guys. They've had me gobsmacked, mouth agape, wondering "WHAT IN THE NAME OF HOBGOBLINS is this guy... WHAAAT??!!!!". Like a stunned mullet. Yeah, that's pretty much the only way I can describe it without spoiling it for you.

This new season, Series 3, also had a very particular scene completely catch me by surprise and scare the living daylights out of me. By now, I know these things do happen yet it still sideswiped me. But I am telling yooou, this particular thing was EVERY FEMALE'S NIGHTMARE. I completely freaked out and side-fist punched my bed from the shock.

Speaking of the females....

How YOU doin'?

Just waaaaiiiit till you get to this guy.

Get your Apple TV's, or set your DVR's for September, or wherever you get your shows from, and start watching Luther. The first half of Series 1 was a tad slow to take off, but it totally picks up in the second half then just soars higher every episode and every series after that. I can do a proper review of this latest season after it has at least aired in America. Because, you know, spoilers!

WANTED: Artists
Undead or Alive!

I read a short e-novel called Atticus for the Undead by John Abramowitz not long ago. It's the start of a series following Hunter Gamble...attorney for the Undead and other creatures of the night. It's like.... dammit!!! I don't know how to explain it!!!! It's really good!! While reading, it conjured images of a lot of the scenes in the book in graphic novel style. The story inspired a color scheme, a distinct style, and specific scene shots. Very. Clearly. Rather than a comic book style graphic novel with speech bubbles, I was thinking more of a hybrid between a graphic novel and an illustrated novel. Lots of full page spreads of art as well as writing. I would have KILLED (and needed Hunter's lawerly help) to actually see it in print and in my hands.

Nowadays, we're all struggling to make ends meet and build our lives while we pursue our dreams. Unfortunately, we don't all get our books picked up and published right away. Like in Mr. Abramowitz's case, self e-publication is becoming a standard move now.

I liked the book so much and wanted the graphic novel version so badly, I basically straight up asked the author to do it. Turns out he really wants the same thing, too!! Sadly, it's gonna have to wait until he can afford to hire an artist to make it happen. Translation: it's gonna take forever and may never happen unless we all get lucky.

Which got me thinking.

How many artists are out there praying to the Lords of Kobol that they could get a gig helping an author create an illustrated novel? They'd need a portfolio AND preferably some successful paid gigs already under their belt to get higher up on the hiring ladder. Ya' know, boost stats for even better chances at more paid artwork. It's a cruel world. I bet there are talented artists out there with all the tools and supplies rearing to go; artists just waiting for someone to take a chance on them; artists who would gladly partner for free with an author for a real shot at publication. Then, artist and author alike, could both make their time and money back from the book's earnings if it got picked up. IS THAT YOU?

What?!! It's a Wanted poster!!

I would love to see this project happen!!! If you're an artist and want to do something like this, let me know!! I want to see your artwork!! Read the book, see what it inspires, then pitch your ideas to me. I want to work together with Mr. Abramowitz and with you to make it happen. I'd love to follow the project, blog about it, and do what I can to help make it a success.

It has a greater chance of publication if the book and artwork have already merged and turned into a masterpiece. I want the publishing houses to pick it up and do their thing. I don't want to just go the kickstarter route; enough of us struggle with our finances and can barely afford to buy the product as it is! As a minimum, a visually juiced novel would be more marketable and sell better even as a self-published e-book. Comic books & graphic novels are so much more affordable for the iPad and just as beautiful. We never know what will happen unless we actually try and try again; so, why not?

It's not even just about the project. It's about the underdog winning!! I want to see dreams come true and visions come to fruition. Fight!! Never say die!! LET'S DO THIS!!!

Tweet at me if you want to make this happen!! We'll DM and discuss the details and I'll talk to the author. Meanwhile, read the book!!! It's available at Amazon right here for less than a Starbuck's coffee!!
